Rules

Additional clarifications:

Co-incidental minor penalties

  1. Rule book Article 80, states "Minor penalties awarded simultaneous to both teams "DO NOT" (rule book emphasis) cause numerical inequalities.  However, the players are not replaced on the ice and neither penalty can be canceled if a goal is scored".
  2. There is no YBA House League rule overriding this.
  3. Hence, for coincidental minor penalties, both teams loose a player, and will play (in the absence of other penalties or circumstances), 4 on 4.  At the end of the penalty, both players may immediately return to play, or be substituted out following the normal procedure (step onto ice, proceed to bench, etc.). - they do NOT need to wait for a play stoppage.

Hand Passes

  • To be legal, the pass must be ENTIRELY in the defensive zone, which is behind the defending teams' blue line.  i.e. must be PASSED and RECEIVED behind blue line.

Offside

  • In broomball, is the RED line.
  • Players and teams are responsible for knowing if they are off-side.
  • Referees will usually indicate, by a raised (non red band) arm, if the team currently IN POSSESSION of the ball will be off-side if the ball crosses the red line (i.e. players are in the other teams half, while the ball is in the attacking teams defensive half).

Passing the stick

  1. Rule book, Article 66(b) "Dropped Broom" states "another player may not intentionally direct the broom towards the player who dropped it."
  2. Also, another player cannot pick it up and pass it under Article 108 "A player may at no time have more than one broom in his/her hands, while play is in progress."
  3. Hence, players should not pass or hand or kick dropped sticks to their fellow player.
  4. A player COULD give their stick to the player without a stick, then pickup and use the loose stick, as no player has more than one at once.
  5. Referees discretion if this is material to play - a warning may be justified instead of a penalty.
  6. Players kicking opponent dropped sticks away likely will be penalized for Interference.

Penalty Shots

  • During the attempt, the BALL must move continuously towards the goal once touched.  No re-bounds, no taking the ball backwards.  Player is free to move forward and back directions, it's the BALL that must keeping moving forward. Alternatively, players may take a single shot from the marked spot in front of the goal (player choice).  The player who was fouled must take the shot.

Icing during penalties / When teams have the lead

  • Unlike ICE HOCKEY, icing is NOT waived off during a penalty kill.  Repeated / deliberate icings by the shorthanded / penalized team may result in an additional delay of game penalty.
  • In addition, repeated / deliberate icings by a team in the scoring lead may also result in a delay of game penalty (as we use run time).
